The Armor Is a Person

PASTOR MIKE HENRY · EPHESIANS 6:10–18
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.”

The big idea

The armor of God isn't a set of techniques. It's Jesus Himself, put on by faith every day.

Paul tells believers to put on the full armor of God. In Romans 13:14 he says, “clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.” Read together, the point is clear: every piece of the armor points to Him.

The outline
  1. Our strength is borrowed

    EPHESIANS 6:10 →

“Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” The strength is His before it is ever ours. We receive it before we use it.

    • Self-reliance is the first crack in the armor.
    • Strength comes from union with Christ.
  2. Our enemy is real, but not human

    EPHESIANS 6:11–12 →

Our struggle is not against flesh and blood. The devil works by schemes, not just open attacks. Knowing who the real enemy is changes how you treat people.

    • Discernment: name the scheme.
    • Compassion: people are not your enemy.
  3. Every piece is Christ

    EPHESIANS 6:14–17 →

Truth: Jesus is the truth (John 14:6). Righteousness: He became our righteousness (1 Corinthians 1:30). Peace: He Himself is our peace (Ephesians 2:14). Faith rests on Him. Salvation is found in Him. And the Word became flesh in Him (John 1:14).

    • Putting on the armor means abiding in Jesus.
    • The sword is the only offensive weapon, and it is God's Word spoken.
  4. The armor goes on in prayer

    EPHESIANS 6:18 →

Paul's very next words: “Pray in the Spirit at all times.” Armor without prayer is a costume. Prayer is how you get dressed and how you stay in the fight.

    • Every kind of prayer and petition.
    • Stay alert, and pray for all the saints.
Take it home
  • Each morning this week, pray through the six pieces, naming Jesus in each one.
  • Memorize Ephesians 6:10–11.
  • Pray every day for one believer you know is under attack.
For small groups
  1. Which piece of armor do you most often leave off?
  2. How does seeing each piece as Christ change how you “put it on”?
  3. Who needs you to pray for them this week?
Closing prayer

Lord Jesus, You are my truth, my righteousness, my peace and my salvation. I put You on today. Teach me to stand, to speak Your Word, and to pray at all times. Amen.
