Why forty-two

Forty-two generations. Not one wasted.

Matthew opens his Gospel with a count. Three runs of fourteen, from Abraham to the Messiah. Kings and failures, exiles and nobodies, all held in one line God never let go of.

Your story is not random either. Every season, even the one in Babylon, is counted, and it is moving toward Christ.

      About

      Kindling for a cold generation.

Faith and Forty Two exists to put the Word of God in front of people every day, plainly and without apology, so their faith catches fire and stays lit.

      Our mission

Read it. Carry it. Stand on it.

Too much faith today is comfortable and quiet. Jesus didn't call us to that. He called us to take up a cross, to be salt and light, to be hot and not lukewarm.

We share Scripture first, then insight that comes from it. No hype and no watered-down message. Only the living Word, applied to real battles: fear, temptation, grief, purpose and calling.

The name comes from Matthew 1:17. Forty-two generations led to Christ, and every one of them counted. Yours does too.

      Our colors

      Woven from the tabernacle.

God told Moses to make the tabernacle curtains of fine linen and blue, purple and scarlet yarns, with gold for the ark and lampstand. Those colors run through every page of this site. EXODUS 26:1 →

      What we believe

      The ground we stand on.

      • The WordThe Bible is the inspired Word of God, true and our final authority for faith and life.
      • One GodOne God, eternally existing as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
      • Jesus ChristFully God and fully man. He died for our sins, rose bodily from the grave, and reigns today.
      • SalvationBy grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Not by our works.
      • The Holy SpiritHe lives in every believer, giving power to live holy and to bear witness.
      • His returnJesus is coming back. We live ready, and we live on fire.
      FAITH & FORTY TWO
      The mark

A flame with the cross burned through it.

The fire doesn't hide the cross. The cross is what the fire reveals, the way the furnace revealed a fourth Man walking with the three.

      • Outer flameThe refiner's fire. Deep red at the root, gold at the tip.
      • Inner flameThe Spirit within. White-hot, burning from the inside out.

      The seven I AM statements

Jesus took God's name for Himself.

At the burning bush God called Himself I AM. In John's Gospel, Jesus says egō eimi, “I am,” the same words the Greek Old Testament uses for God's name. Nobody who heard Him missed the claim.

          A word from Pastor Mike

          Friend,

Welcome to Faith and Forty Two. I'm glad you're here.

I started this ministry because I'm convinced God never meant for His people to live lukewarm. Too many believers are saved but not set on fire. They know about Jesus, but His Word isn't burning in their bones. I've seen what happens when someone gets hungry for Scripture and serious about prayer. Everything changes.

That's why this site puts the Bible first. Read it here in full. Dig into the Greek and Hebrew. Pray through the battle you're facing. Take the 42-Day Fire and let God's Word work on you one chapter at a time.

The name comes from Matthew 1:17. Forty-two generations led to Christ, and not one of them was wasted. Your story isn't wasted either. Wherever you are right now, God is still writing it, and it's moving toward Jesus.

Stay hungry. Stay in the Word. Stay on fire.

          Know Jesus

The best news you will ever hear.

Everything on this site points to one Person. If you've never put your trust in Jesus, or you're not sure where you stand with God, start here.

          1. 1

God made you, and He loves you

You were made by God, for God. His love isn't a reward for being good. It's the reason you exist.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”JOHN 3:16 →
          2. 2

            Sin separates us from God

Every one of us has turned our own way. Sin isn't just bad behavior. It's a broken relationship with the God who made us, and it leads to death.

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…”ROMANS 3:23 →
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”ROMANS 6:23 →
          3. 3

Jesus died and rose for you

Jesus, God's Son, lived the life we couldn't, died the death we deserved, and rose from the grave. The debt is paid in full.

“But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”ROMANS 5:8 →
“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures…”1 CORINTHIANS 15:3–4 →
          4. 4

            Turn and trust

You can't earn this. You receive it. Turn from your sin and trust Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

““The time is fulfilled,” He said, “and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!””MARK 1:15 →
“that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”ROMANS 10:9 →
          5. 5

            Begin a new life

Everyone who receives Jesus becomes a child of God and a new creation. This is the beginning, not the finish line.

“But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God…”JOHN 1:12 →
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come!”2 CORINTHIANS 5:17 →
          A prayer to begin

          Talk to Him now.

There are no magic words. God looks at the heart. If you're ready to turn to Jesus, you can tell Him in your own words, or pray something like this:

Jesus, I know I've sinned and I can't save myself. I believe You died for my sins and that God raised You from the dead. I turn from my sin and trust You as my Lord and Savior. Forgive me, make me new, and lead my life from today on. Amen.

            Can we trust the Bible?
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness…”2 TIMOTHY 3:16 · BSB →

The Bible is not one book but sixty-six, written over about 1,500 years by some forty authors, and it tells one consistent story about God rescuing His people through Jesus. That alone is remarkable.

We also have more ancient copies of the New Testament than of any other ancient book, over 5,000 Greek manuscripts, some dating within a few generations of the originals. When the Dead Sea Scrolls were found in 1947, they included a copy of Isaiah roughly a thousand years older than the oldest copy known before, and the text was remarkably consistent.

The writers present themselves as eyewitnesses or careful investigators, not storytellers. Luke says he investigated everything carefully, and Peter insists they did not follow cleverly devised fables. Archaeology has confirmed many places and people they mention, from the Pool of Bethesda to an inscription naming Pontius Pilate.

In the end, Christians trust the Bible because Jesus did. He treated the Scriptures as the very word of God and said they all point to Him.

Did Jesus really rise from the dead?
“But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.”1 CORINTHIANS 15:20 · BSB →

Christianity stands or falls on the resurrection. Paul says that if Christ has not been raised, our faith is futile. So the question matters more than any other.

The evidence is strong. The tomb was empty, and even Jesus' enemies didn't dispute that; they claimed the body was stolen. Jesus appeared to many people, including more than five hundred at once, most of whom were still alive when Paul wrote and could be asked.

The first witnesses were women, whose testimony carried little weight in that culture, an odd detail to invent. The disciples went from hiding in fear to preaching boldly in the same city, and many of them suffered and died rather than deny what they had seen. Skeptics like James, Jesus' own brother, and Paul, a persecutor of the church, became believers.

The simplest explanation is the one the witnesses gave: He is not here; He has risen, just as He said.

Is Jesus the only way to God?
“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”JOHN 14:6 · BSB →

Jesus Himself made the claim: “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” The apostles repeated it: there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.

That can sound narrow, but think about what it means. If there were another way to be forgiven, the cross would be the most needless tragedy in history. Jesus is the only way because He is the only one who paid for sin.

And the door is wide open. Anyone, from any nation, background or past, can come through it. The invitation is not exclusive in who it welcomes, only in who it points to.

So the question is not whether God is fair to leave other ways closed, but whether we will accept the one way He opened at such great cost.

            Why does God allow suffering?
“‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”REVELATION 21:4 · BSB →

This is one of the hardest questions there is, and the Bible doesn't hide from it. Whole books, like Job and Lamentations, and many psalms, wrestle with pain honestly.

Scripture teaches that the world is broken because of sin. Creation itself groans. God made people free to love Him, and that freedom made real evil possible. Much suffering comes from human choices; some comes from living in a fallen world.

But God is not distant from our pain. In Jesus He entered it: rejected, beaten and crucified. We have a High Priest who can sympathize with our weaknesses. And God works even the worst things together for the good of those who love Him.

Most of all, suffering will not have the last word. God promises a day when He will wipe away every tear, and there will be no more death or pain. We may not get every answer now, but we can trust the One who has the final answer.

            Who is the Holy Spirit?
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.”JOHN 14:26 · BSB →

The Holy Spirit is not a force or a feeling. He is a person, the third person of the Trinity, fully God. He teaches, guides, comforts and can be grieved.

Jesus called Him the Advocate, the One who would be with His followers forever. At Pentecost He came to live in every believer, and Paul says our bodies are His temple.

The Spirit convicts the world of sin, gives new life, helps us pray, and grows His fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. He also gives gifts to build up the church.

If you belong to Jesus, you are not alone. God Himself lives in you.

            What is the Trinity?
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit…”MATTHEW 28:19 · BSB →

Christians believe in one God who eternally exists as three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Each is fully God, yet there is only one God.

The word Trinity isn't in the Bible, but the teaching is everywhere. Scripture insists there is one God, yet calls the Father God, the Son God and the Spirit God. At Jesus' baptism all three are present at once: the Son in the water, the Spirit descending, and the Father speaking from heaven.

Every illustration falls short, and that is fine. We should expect the infinite God to be bigger than our analogies.

The Trinity also tells us something beautiful: love is at the very heart of God. Before the world existed, the Father, Son and Spirit shared perfect love, and through Jesus we are invited into it.

            Can I lose my salvation?
“I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.”1 JOHN 5:13 · BSB →

Sincere Christians have answered this question differently. Many believe that those truly born again will be kept by God to the end. Others believe a person can turn away and fall from grace. Both sides take Scripture seriously.

Some passages stress God's keeping power: no one can snatch Jesus' sheep out of His hand, and He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion. Others warn believers seriously not to drift away or harden their hearts.

What all agree on is this: your security rests on Jesus, not on your performance. John wrote so that those who believe would know they have eternal life.

If you're worried about this, that itself is a good sign. Look to Christ, keep trusting Him, stay close to His people, and rest in His faithfulness.

            What happens when we die?
“We are confident, then, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.”2 CORINTHIANS 5:8 · BSB →

For those who belong to Jesus, death is not the end. Paul says that to be away from the body is to be at home with the Lord, and that to depart and be with Christ is far better.

But that isn't the final chapter. The Bible promises a future bodily resurrection. When Christ returns, the dead in Christ will be raised with glorified bodies, never to die again.

Scripture also teaches that every person will face judgment. That is why the gospel is urgent: Jesus took judgment for all who trust Him.

The end of the story is not floating on clouds. It is a new heaven and a new earth, where God lives with His people and makes all things new.

            Do science and faith conflict?
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”PSALM 19:1 · BSB →

Many of the founders of modern science, including Kepler, Boyle, Newton and Faraday, were devout believers who saw their work as exploring the order God built into creation.

The Bible teaches that creation reveals God's power and nature. Science studies how the world works; Scripture tells us who made it and why. They answer different questions and can both be true.

Christians hold a range of views on the details of how and when God created, and they can disagree charitably. What Scripture insists on is that God is the Creator and that the universe is not an accident.

Far from undermining faith, the order, beauty and fine-tuning of the universe have led many scientists to wonder at the Designer behind it.

How do I know God's will?
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”ROMANS 12:2 · BSB →

Much of God's will is already clear in Scripture: that you be holy, rejoice at all times, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in every circumstance, and love God and your neighbor. Start there.

For decisions the Bible doesn't spell out, God gives wisdom to those who ask. He also guides through wise counsel from mature believers, through open and closed doors, and through the peace of Christ ruling in your heart.

God's will is less like a hidden maze and more like a path He lights one step at a time. Trust Him with all your heart, acknowledge Him in all your ways, and He will make your paths straight.

If you're seeking Him and walking in obedience, you can make a decision with confidence. He is able to redirect you.

Why do I need a church?
“And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”HEBREWS 10:24–25 · BSB →

Following Jesus is personal, but it was never meant to be private. The New Testament describes the church as a body: many parts, each needed, all connected to Christ the Head.

In church you are taught the Word, you worship with others, you receive and give encouragement, and you use the gifts God gave you to serve. You also find people who will pray for you and tell you the truth in love.

Hebrews warns believers not to neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit. Lone Christians tend to grow cold, just like a coal pulled out of the fire.

No church is perfect, because it is full of forgiven sinners. Look for one that faithfully teaches the Bible, exalts Jesus and loves people, and commit to it.

            What are baptism and communion?
“We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life.”ROMANS 6:4 · BSB →

Jesus gave His church two practices to remember and proclaim the gospel. Christian traditions differ on some details, such as the age and method of baptism, but all agree on their importance.

Baptism is a public step of faith that pictures being united with Christ in His death and resurrection: buried with Him and raised to walk in newness of life. Jesus commanded His followers to baptize new disciples in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Communion, also called the Lord's Supper, was given by Jesus the night before He died. The bread represents His body given for us and the cup His blood of the new covenant. Each time we share it, we proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.

Both point away from ourselves to what Jesus has done. If you've trusted Christ and haven't been baptized, talk to a pastor about taking that step.

            Noah trusts God

People had stopped caring about God, but Noah loved Him. God told Noah to build a giant boat called an ark. It took a long time, and people probably laughed. But Noah obeyed. When the flood came, Noah's family and the animals were safe inside. Afterward God put a rainbow in the sky as a promise.

Daniel prayed to God three times every day. Some jealous men tricked the king into making a law against praying to God. Daniel prayed anyway! He was thrown into a den of hungry lions, but God sent His angel to shut the lions' mouths. In the morning Daniel was safe.
