“Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was deeply hurt that Jesus had asked him a third time, “Do you love Me?” “Lord, You know all things,” he replied. “You know I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.”JOHN 21:17 · BSB · READ JOHN 21:1–19 →
Jesus doesn't restore us by pretending we never failed. He restores us by meeting us at the fire and asking about love.
After the resurrection, Peter went back to the only thing he knew: fishing. He had denied Jesus three times. He probably assumed he was finished. Jesus disagreed.
Jesus finds us where we went back to
JOHN 21:3–6 →“I am going fishing,” Peter said, and the others went too. They caught nothing all night. Jesus called from the shore, and the net filled. He met them in their old life and showed them it could never fill them like He could.
- Failure often sends us back to old patterns.
- Jesus will come to the shore of our retreat.
Jesus feeds before He asks
JOHN 21:9–13 →A charcoal fire was burning with fish and bread already on it. Jesus served breakfast before He asked a single hard question. Grace comes first.
- The same kind of fire as the night Peter denied Him (John 18:18).
- Restoration begins at the table, not the courtroom.
Three questions for three denials
JOHN 21:15–17 →“Simon son of John, do you love Me?” Three times, one for each denial. Peter is hurt, but Jesus is not shaming him. He is giving him the chance to say yes as many times as he said no.
- Jesus deals with failure directly and gently.
- Love for Jesus is the root of every ministry.
Restored to a mission and a cross
JOHN 21:18–19 →Jesus tells Peter how he will one day glorify God by his death, and then says two words: “Follow Me.” The same call from the beginning. Failure did not cancel it.
- Your calling survives your worst day.
- Following Jesus means a cross, and He is worth it.
- Bring your biggest failure to Jesus in prayer, by name.
- Answer His question out loud: “Lord, You know I love You.”
- Ask Jesus what He wants you to “feed” in this season.
- Where do you tend to go back to after failure?
- Why do you think Jesus served breakfast before asking anything?
- What would it mean to hear “Follow Me” again today?
Jesus, You know all things. You know I failed You, and You know I love You. Thank You for the fire, the breakfast and the question. Restore me, and give me sheep to feed. Amen.
