11Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore take up the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you will be able to stand your ground, and having done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness arrayed,
READ THE WHOLE CHAPTER →Nobody gets far when their pants are falling down. That sounds silly, but think about it. You can have the best boots and the sharpest tools, and if your belt is missing you'll spend the whole day holding things up instead of getting things done. The belt is not glamorous. It just holds everything together.
Paul starts the armor there. “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist.” In the Roman world a soldier's belt was a basic part of his gear. It cinched his tunic and kept him ready to move. In the ancient world, when a man tucked up his long garment and tightened his belt, he was getting ready for action. Israel ate the first Passover fully dressed for travel, ready to go at a moment's notice (Exodus 12:11). Paul is saying the same thing. Get ready. And start with truth.
What truth does Paul have in mind? Two things, and you need both. First, the truth of God, the gospel he has been unfolding all through this letter. Back in chapter one he called it “the word of truth” and “the gospel of your salvation.” Second, truthfulness in you. In chapter four he told the church to put off falsehood and speak truthfully to one another (Ephesians 4:25). God's truth outside of you and honesty inside of you. One is the belt. The other is actually wearing it.
Jesus said it plainly. “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Notice the order. Continue in His word, and you will know the truth. Truth is not a feeling you wake up with. It is something you stay in. You buckle it on by going back to God's word again and again, until it holds you together on the days your emotions don't.
Here is why the enemy hates the belt. Jesus called the devil “a liar and the father of lies.” His whole strategy runs on deception. He lied in the garden, and he has been running the same play ever since. God is holding out on you. You are too far gone. This sin is no big deal. Every one of those is a lie, and the only way to beat a lie is with the truth.
Lies also get in when we tell them. Maybe it's a small one. You shade the numbers on the report. You tell your wife you're fine when you're not. You show up at church as a version of yourself that is not the one at home. Every little lie loosens the belt, and when the belt is loose, everything else starts to slip. A man living a double life can't stand firm, because he is spending all his strength holding the story together.
Here is the good news. Truth is not just a rule. Truth is a Person. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” Because He died for your sins and rose again, you don't have to hide anymore. You can bring the whole truth about yourself to Him, and He will not throw you out. Confession is not the end of you. It is the beginning of freedom. The truth that exposes you is the same truth that sets you free.
So this morning, tighten your belt. Open His word before you open your phone. Ask Him to show you any place where you have been living a lie, even a little one. Make it right if you need to. Then walk into the day with nothing to hide and nothing to hold up. That is a good way to start a fight.
This verb, behind the phrase “buckled around your waist” in verse 14, means to gird or fasten a belt around oneself. Paul uses a middle form, which fits the picture of a person fastening it on himself. Luke 12:35 uses the same verb when Jesus tells His disciples to be dressed for service, ready for their master's return.
OPEN G4024 IN THE DICTIONARY →Father, Your word is truth, and I need it to hold me together today. Forgive me for the lies I have believed and the ones I have told, even the small ones. Thank You that Jesus is the truth and that He has set me free. Help me continue in Your word so I really know You. When the enemy whispers lies, bring Your truth to my mind. Make me honest at home, at work, and in my own heart. In Jesus' name, amen.
Before you look at your phone, read John 8:31-32 slowly. Then ask God to show you one place where you need to tell the truth today, and do it.
