“I know your deeds; you are neither cold nor hot. How I wish you were one or the other! So because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to vomit you out of My mouth!”REVELATION 3:15–16 · BSB · READ THE CHAPTER →Greek: chliaros (G5513), lukewarm
Laodicea was rich. It had banking, a medical school and a famous textile industry. It also had a water problem. Its water came in by aqueduct, and many scholars think it arrived lukewarm and heavy with minerals, unlike the hot springs of nearby Hierapolis or the cold, pure water of Colossae.
Jesus used that picture for His church. They weren't openly rebelling. They were comfortable. They said they were rich and needed nothing.
Lukewarm doesn't look like rebellion. It looks like being busy, being fine, being almost there. It looks like a faith that costs nothing and changes nothing.
Paul's cure is in Romans 12:11: be zeō in spirit, boiling. That fire isn't a bigger emotion. It's a daily altar. Scripture before screens. Prayer before plans. Obedience before comfort.
- Where has comfort replaced hunger in your walk with God?
- What fills the first hour of your day?
- What is one thing you'd give up if you were truly on fire for Jesus?
Pick one daily altar for the next seven days: the first 15 minutes of your morning go to the Word before your phone.
Faith isn't believing God will do what you want. It's trusting Him when He doesn't.
