“Even if He does not”

3 MIN READ · FAITH AND FORTY TWO
“If the God whom we serve exists, then He is able to deliver us from the blazing fiery furnace and from your hand, O king. But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden statue you have set up.”
DANIEL 3:17–18 · BSB · READ THE CHAPTER →Aramaic: wehen la, “and if not”

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego stood in front of the most powerful man on earth with a furnace burning behind him. They had one chance to bow. They didn't.

Their answer had two parts. First, God is able. They believed in miracles. Second, even if He does not, we still won't bow. Their loyalty was not a deal they had made with God. It was settled before the fire was lit.

Faith that only holds when the outcome is guaranteed is really a negotiation. The world is full of people who will follow God as long as He delivers on their terms. The furnace finds those people out.

The three walked into the fire bound and walked out loose. The only thing the fire burned was the ropes. When you've already decided who you serve, pressure has nothing left to bargain with.

Questions for reflection
  1. What outcome have you quietly made a condition of your obedience?
  2. Where are you tempted to bow just a little to keep the peace?
  3. What would change this week if your answer were already settled?
Put it into practice

Write down the one thing you're afraid God won't do. Then finish this sentence underneath it: “Even if He does not, I will still…”

Your worst day is not stronger than His empty tomb.
